Hanukkah is Early This Year: December 1 through 9

by on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

According to Jewish tradition, the first day of Hanukkah can fall anywhere between November 28th and December 26th. The holiday falls on the early end of that range this year, with Hanukkah beginning at sundown on December 1—less than a week after Thanksgiving. Are you ready?

Apart from the usual menorah lighting and gift giving, you need some new and different things to do after the latkes are gone—especially if you have out-of-town guests.

Let’s Get Out of the House

Here are some fun local activities to keep everyone happy without breaking the bank.

  • For the men: When was the last time Uncle Sid had an old-fashioned barbershop hot shave?  Treat him and yourself to some old-world pampering. At Gent’s Downtown Boca Barbers, Zavee shoppers earn 5% cash back—and a whopping 90% cash back on a haircut if it’s your first time. That’s practically free!
  • For the ladies: One woman’s castoff designer lamp is another woman’s treasure. Take the girls bargain hunting in Boca, where previously loved items come from the finest homes. Try voguElements Consignment or Past Perfect consignment store, both specializing in furniture, rugs, art, home accessories, and antiques.
  • For the kids: Even the most techie kids can be entranced by comic books and the superheroes flying off their pages. Crossroads Comics and Games in Lauderhill has an impressively wide assortment of new and back issue comic books, action figures, and collectibles.
  • And to keep the good vibe going, we recommend New York Comedy Club in Boca. Comedian Bob Golub takes the stage on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4. Golub has performed on The Tonight Show, co-hosted and appeared on hundreds of radio stations around the country, and had a role in Martin Scorsese’s 1990 blockbuster film Goodfellas. Tickets are $15. Purchase in advance for the best seats: http://www.nyccboca.com/buy_tickets.htm

We Love You, Now Go Home

By the end of the Festival of Lights, we hope you have enjoyed the company of family, eaten your share of brisket, and discovered some local businesses you never knew about. Don’t forget to tell your relatives and friends that by joining Zavee, they can earn cash-back discounts all year long, and help a favorite charity at the same time.
